Read the review "Horror Through a Child's Eyes" published in the New York Times in 2008. This is a critical review of the movie - the writer clearly has some problems with this story and film.
Write a comment to this post in which you offer your own opinion of the film. Do you agree with the NY Times writer? Why or why not?

Capote discussion follow-up
In our junior AP class on Tuesday, we had a great discussion of In Cold Blood, and afterward, many were left wanting to say more. So here is one way that we'll attempt to do that! Respond through a comment to this blog post. Feel free to answer one of my questions below, raise your own, and/or respond to another student.
More questions to consider (some from your discussion sheets):
1. What else do you find fascinating and/or disturbing about Truman Capote and the process he went through to write this novel?
2. Why was there so much focus on the psychology of Perry?
3. What are your thoughts on capital punishment after reading this book?
4. What differences in society to you notice between 1959 and today, as well as what differences do you see between the culture here and in Kansas and other Midwestern states?
5. What are your thoughts on Dick's and Perry's opinions of the murders?
6. Capote says that the investigation and the book have stuck with him. How did it stick with you?

Speak: Melinda and Self-Injury
In my Honors English 1 classes, we are reading Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The protagonist, Melinda, has begun injuring herself in various ways. During class sessions, many students are having difficulty understanding what is underneath Melinda's need to cause herself harm. I looked into this further myself, and I found several articles that may be of interest:

"Stop, or I'll Shoot!"
Juniors - if you read the article in the latest Up Front magazine about police officer monitoring, please respond to at least one of these thoughts below:
1. Respond to the question that is raised in the article: "If the police have the right to shoot video in public, should the public have a right to videotape the police?" (14).
2. They mention the famous situation where a bystander videotaped the police beating Rodney King in 1991. Can you describe a famous time in recent years when ordinary people broadcast a video that showed public officials in a bad light? Do you think it's okay for people to be able to do that?
3. How do you feel about the comment "We live in a world where cameras are everywhere, and we are constantly being recorded - often without realizing it" (15)? Do you know of places where you are recorded?
